The iconic locks of Maasbracht
The iconic lock complex of Maasbracht is located in in the Julianakanaal. It has the largest drop of all locks in the Netherlands, at 11.85 meters, and is therefore well worth a visit. The complex comprises three locks with identical gullies, with an extended length of no less than 225 meters and a width of 16.00 meters. Cycle or walk across and be amazed of its size and operation of one of the largest inland navigation locks in the Netherlands and Europe.
The 'white town' of Thorn
Thorn, the "white town", used to serve as a mini principality. Today it's a welcoming town for visitors from all over the world. Thorn is known for its striking white-painted houses and monumental buildings. The Abbey Church towers above the cozy village, and via the typical streets and alleys of mesh pebbles in the historic center, you'll come accros many lovely terraces. Here you'll find regional specialties, both on your plate and in your glass. The fact that it's only 8 minutes away by car, or 22 minutes by bike, makes in a very easy and interesting visit.
The historic city center of Roermond
Roermond is located on only 10-minutes by car, or 30 minutes by bike. The city has a rich history, many sights and a protected cityscape. Special is the influence of Roermond's Pierre Cuypers, grandmaster of the Gothic Revival and Chief Government Architect from the late 19th century. For example, he is present in bronze on "his" Munsterplein. His beautiful (music) Kiosk is still used for concerts. The ECI Culturalfactory and many monuments are also worth admiring. Walk from one monument to another (eg. with a city walk) and marvel at the old trading houses. In between you settle down on the historic Munsterplein and enjoy the atmosphere.
